Water is the essence of life, a necessary resource we sometimes take for granted. Yet, for millions around the world, access to clean and safe drinking water is a struggle, a daily challenge that impedes health, education, and economic prosperity. Thanks to organizations like charity: water, the tide is turning for communities afflicted by this water crisis. At Bottleless Nation, we are proud to support the impactful work of charity: water (thanks to Bottleless Nation Charitable Foundation), a cause that resonates deeply with our mission of sustainability and giving back.

What Does charity: water Do?

Founded in 2006, charity: water is a non-profit organization that brings clean water to people around the world. Their approach is simple yet profound — they mobilize resources, expertise, and local partners to fund clean water solutions in developing countries. Clean water means health, income, and education – especially for women and kids.

Who Does charity: water Help?

To date, charity: water has brought clean water to over 17 million people in 29 countries. charity: water focuses on bringing clean water to remote areas primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.

703 million people in the world live without clean water. That’s more than twice the population of the United States. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep kids out of school or take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that can make everyone sick. But when a community gets access to clean water, it can change just about everything. It can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school.

How Does charity: water Operate?

Transparency and innovation sit at the core of charity: water’s operational philosophy. One of their most commendable practices is the 100% model. Every single penny donated by the public goes directly to funding clean water projects. They even pay back credit card fees, which means if a donor gave $100 with a credit card, and charity: water receives $97, the organization puts back the $3 to help fully fund the $100 donation. This is made possible by a group of private donors called The Well, who fund all the operational costs required to keep the charity running.

Charity: water also leverages advanced technology to ensure project effectiveness and sustainability. They use GPS units to map water points, remote sensors to track water flow, and rigorous data collection to monitor and evaluate the impact of projects. Their projects range from drilled wells to rainwater catchments to water purification systems and biosand filters tailored to meet the specific needs of each community.

Additionally, this organization is dedicated to transparency and provides donors with regular updates on the progress of their funded water projects. Even if the wells are not yet ready to be installed, donors can expect information updates regarding site location, community information.

The Impact

The transformative effect of charity: water’s work cannot be overstated. In communities with access to clean water:

  • Health improves: Waterborne diseases plummet, and overall community health is significantly bolstered.
  • Education flourishes: Children, especially girls, who typically collect water, can attend school consistently.
  • Women are empowered: Freed from the daily burden of water collection, women can pursue additional educational or economic opportunities.
  • Economies grow: Communities can invest time and resources into their development rather than dedicating them to water collection.
