We’re Choking on Plastic

Every year, millions of tons of plastic makes its way into our oceans and freshwater ecosystems, having a direct impact on marine life. Moreover, nearly all Americans see it littered along highways and in our communities every single day.

Plastic Bottle Production
The average American uses 156 plastic bottles each year, and about 1,000 plastic bottles are opened every second of every day. This contributes to the roughly 500 billion plastic bottles in circulation every year.
What’s worse is that only about 12% of plastic bottles get recycled correctly. The rest ends up in our rivers, lakes, landfills, and oceans. So, it’s not an exaggeration when we say that our ecosystems are choking on plastic.
The Price Tag of Plastic Pollution
The average bottle of water costs roughly $1.29. The water itself accounts for less than $0.00001. The rest? It comes from the production of the bottle, the packaging, the extraction and purification, the delivery costs, etc.
It also takes roughly 3x the amount of water to make a plastic bottle than it takes to fill one. And that doesn’t even account for the CO2 production and the oil used throughout the lifespan of a plastic bottle. So, yes, that $1.29 bottle of water comes with a lot higher price tag.

Every year, more than 100 million marine creatures and one million seabirds die from plastic pollution. Plastic is so prevalent in our oceans that it’s been found in the deepest parts, including the Mariana Trench.
